About 10 years ago, Innovation Advisor Dr. Jamie Pero-Parker collaborated on published research that looked into those questions.
The research predicted that
- we needed large-scale change including new ways of collaborating.
- regulations or consumer demand would likely be the drivers of these bold changes that would impact how companies work, deliver products, and interact with consumers.
Fast forward to the present, and much of what Jamie Pero-Parker postulated is playing out.
Today, European legislation has begun to enable systems change by holding companies accountable for the waste they produce; the legislation has positively impacted the problem of waste. In the US, Maine and Oregon have passed extended producer responsibility laws that require companies to pay the cost of recycling the packaging they create. More states are expected to follow, and national legislation appears likely. These efforts combined with strong consumer demand have compelled companies to take bold steps related to their sustainability efforts.
